Rio de Janeiro Galeao - Antonio Carlos Jobim International Airport (GIG)
Travel and Ground Transport
(Rio de Janeiro, Brazil)
There are many ground transfer options at Rio de Janeiro International Airport (GIG) and passengers can decide on their preferred mode of transport based on factors such as price, convenience and comfort.
Public buses are the cheapest option aside from free hotel shuttles while taxis provide a more expensive, but comfortable alternative. Airport and privately-operated shuttle services are also cheap and reliable.
Buses
Public buses run from the airport to Novo Rio Rodoviaria bus station, which is located a short distance from downtown Rio.
Shuttle Buses
The airport operates a once hourly shuttle bus service, which calls at popular hotels and resorts. Meanwhile, Empresa Real offer buses from the airport to major hotels and seafront destinations.
Hotel Shuttles
Popular hotels will either provide their own vehicles for airport pick ups or use private companies such as Empresa Real. Shuttles are invariably free and/or provided as part of a holiday package. Visitors are advised to check the availability of shuttles with their travel agent or directly with their hotel at the time of booking.
Taxi Cabs
Taxis are available from a rank situated outside the airport, but metered fares vary massively and the service provided by the Rio de Janeiro State Tourism Authority is considered more reliable. Passengers should approach the Rio de Janeiro State Tourism Authority desk and purchase pre-paid travel vouchers. Pick ups are then made from outside Arrivals.
Limousines
There are no limousine companies operating from the airport. However, guests staying at Le Meridien Copacabana can pre-book limousine pick ups.
