Situated about a 30-minute from downtown Rio on the Ilha do Governador, Rio de Janeiro International Airport (GIG) enjoys an island setting, next to the mainland. The airport can be accessed easily from most Rio destinations by using Highway BR-101 (Avenida Brasil), then travelling across bridges to Ilha do Fundao and Ilha do Governador.

Rio de Janeiro Airport is also close to the BR-040 (Rod Washington Luiz), located to the north-west, and the Via Expressa Presidente Joao Goulart / Linha Vermelha, which crosses the water and borders the western side of the grounds. Other notable roads around the complex include the Avenida Vinte de Janeiro, the Estr. Itacolomi and the Estr. das Canárias. The airport is signposted locally as the 'Aeroporto Internacional Antonio Carlos Jobim'.

• From Duque de Caxias, head south along Highway BR-101 to Ramos
• Head east from Ramos, then north to the airport

• From Niteroi, follow signs for Highway BR-101
