Rio de Janeiro: City Hotels and Accommodation
Central Rio contains a mind-boggling array of hotels, many of which lie just 20 km / 13 miles south of Rio de Janeiro Galeao / Antonio Carlos Jobim International Airport (GIG). Much of the city's accommodation consists of modern, high-rise hotels, many of which line Rio's spectacular coastline and offer superb views of the Atlantic Ocean.
Hotels in Rio de Janeiro are particularly abundant around Copacabana Beach, which has long been the centrepiece of the city's many beaches, often being featured on city postcards. Known for its crescent shape, endless selection of accommodation and glorious views, Copacabana Beach is without doubt one of Rio de Janeiro's most famous draw cards, with the area regularly attracting in excess of half a million tourists during summer weekends.
A number of outlying beaches in Rio de Janeiro also offer many noteworthy hotels, particularly along the sandy stretches to the south of Ipanema. Amongst the most popular beaches, Sao Conrado is accessible by a tunnel through the Dois Irmaos Mountain and is home to more than its fair share of hotels, suiting most budgets. The area can also be reached by travelling along the scenic Avenida Niemeyer, where popular accommodation includes the Sheraton Hotel, one of the only actual resort hotels in the whole of Rio de Janeiro.
